About RE3
RE3 is North Carolina’s second recycling campaign and the “older sibling” of the Recycle Guys. Using social marketing techniques, the N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance designed RE3 to increase participation in recycling through positive behavior change. Recycling coordinators across the state use RE3 materials in their programs, presentations and interactions with the public to reinforce the RE3 concepts of recycling, reducing and reusing. Coupled with a statewide media campaign, including television and cinema ads, RE3 reaches from the mountains to the coast encouraging people to recycle – and not just at home. This campaign develops recycling behaviors at the office, at parties, at ballgames and anywhere else North Carolinians go.
About RE3's Creation
Funky, edgy, hip, urban… look no further than the creators of RE3: Keefe Harrison, Allison Hauser and Jesse Rademacher.
In the spring of 2004, DPPEA had been running an effective program for youth—Recycle Guys—but it didn't resonate as much with the twenty-something crowd. Keefe, a DPPEA waste reduction specialist, envisioned a broad social marketing-based campaign that would take the recycling message to an older audience. In came Allison, a social marketing specialist, and Jesse, a designer. With lots of brainpower and creativity among the three, the concepts of RE3 were born!
Thanks to the invaluable help and encouragement of local government recycling coordinators, collegiate recycling coordinators, DPPEA staff and friends (who hear us talk about recycling way too much), RE3 has exploded as North Carolina’s latest and greatest effort to show citizens that recycling does pay and that sustainability can be a cool and easy part of your everyday activities. RE3 continues to evolve as recycling and sustainability become more essential elements of every North Carolinian’s life.
About DPPEA The Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance is a non-regulatory, purely assistance-based division of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The mission of DPPEA is to protect the environment and conserve natural resources by providing technical assistance on the elimination, reduction, reuse and recycling of wastes and pollutants. Today, Waste Management Analyst Kelley Dennings, Designer Jesse Rademacher and Waste Management Intern Trina Ozer work to keep RE3 up-to-date and useful for North Carolinians.
